    • Yellow construction paper or black marker
    • Clear contact paper 7"x8"
    • Straight pin
    • Cut big bow and knot in the darker blue construction paper. Cut smaller bow out of lighter blue. Glue little bow on top of bigger bow, then glue knot on top of both. When all is dry, peel one end of contact paper half way and place bow tie face down in the middle. Peel second half and enclose the back side of the tie. Trim edges, leave enough to properly seal name tag. Option: on little bow glue knot then father's name. Wrap big bow and little bow individually with contact paper. Bend little bow's sides up towards middle, then glue only the knot area of the little bow to the big bow (hold with two clothes pins). This gives the bow a raised effect.

    • 1 yard white lace
    • 15" round fabric circle (print with pink color)
    • Black construction paper
    • 1 spray can of white primer
    • 1 spray can of pink metal paint
    • Tacky glue
    • Hot glue gun
    • Needle & thread (fabric color)
    • Before starting craft: consult with "Safety-Wise"; pg 61 "Arts and Crafts" and pg 62 "Clothing"
    • Spray and let dry in two stages, white primer then pink paint. Measure and glue white lace to base of can and let dry (collar). On a selected side of the can, glue on eyes, make eye lashes out of black construction paper, glue on. Cut a heart out of red felt or construction paper and glue on (mouth). On top of lid, glue rest of lace on the edge. Set aside to dry (may need clothes pins to hold lace down while it dries) (hat rim). With 15" fabric circle, and double strand of close matching thread, do a running stitch 1/4" all around the edge, and gather as you go along. Continue to gather by pulling thread snugly until at the end, there is now only a small opening; tie off thread to the beginning and cut off excess (hat). With small amount of stuffing material at a time, fill the hat enough to where it is nice and full not "stuffed". The following is the only time the hot glue gun is used on this project: on the bottom of the hat where the opening is, hot glue all around. Count to 20 before placing the plastic lid on top. This will keep the lid from melting. Place in can any of Mom's favorite goodies.
  • Father's Treasure Can

    • Sewing machine thread (towel color)
    • Seamstress transfer tracing paper
    • Pre-wash twoel (to make sure color won't bleed later) and iron to have non-wrinkled surface. Lay towel on flat surface - select area for design and pin facing down, transfer tracing paper (light color towels use darker tracing paper and dark towels use lighter tracing paper). Pin design on top of tracing paper and using a little pressure, trace design. Before removing any pins, peel a corner to see if design has been transferred to towel. Repeat tracing with a little more pressure. Choose a starting area and connect embroidery hoop. Make sure tension is a little firm with the hoop for a firm surface to work with. *With 1 thread of embroidery thread about 18" long, thread one end through needle and let it join the other end evenly; join with a knot (double threading). Backstitch direction below. When design is complete: 1/2" at the top of the towel- *double thread needle with color (sewing thread) close to the towel's, and using a running stitch, go from one end across to the otehr and pull thread to give a slight gathered appearance; tie off. Outdoor and Nature

  • Ant Hike
    • Materials: 3' piece of string for each person
    • In the outdoors, have each girl place her string along the ground, up trees, into bushes, or wherever to make the "path" an interesting journey for an ant. If the group is small, have each person explain the "highlights" of the tour. For larger groups, have 3-4 girls share their trails with each other.
    • Be sure to get the ant's perspective and follow the string with your nose!
  • Kim's Nature Game
    • Materials: ground materials, bandana
    • Preparation: gather 10 natural objects from the area, make sure there are others of the same object left. Example: acorn, pine needle, bark... Put all ten objects under the bandana
    • Gather the girls around where they can all see. Tell them to look at the items and remember them. Give them 25 seconds to look at the items before covering them again. Next have the girls alone or in teams, for 5 minutes, gather up the objects they saw from the surrounding area. When they come back with their objects, pull yours out from under the bandana, one at a time. Ask who found one just like it.
  • Fairy Wands
    • Materials: sticks, ground materials, yarn or floss
    • Have each girl find her special stick to be the base of her wand. Some girls need a knobby one, some need a smooth, debarked one... To complete the wand attach dried leaves, pine needles and/or other materials, tied on with the yarn or colored embroidery floss.
    • IMAGE
  • Yucca Rope
    • GET PERMISSION TO CUT YUCCA LEAVES
    • Materials: Yucca leaves with sharp tip cut off, newspaper, rock to hammer with for each girl, large pan with water to soak yucca leaf in
    • Have girls work in pairs with each Yucca leaf. Have them bend the leaft to "break the spine". Put leaf on a layer of newspaper on a hard surface. Pound and scrape leaf with rocks to break leaf into fibers. Wash in water until leaf no longer suds. Pull apart fibers. Repeat pounding, scraping and washing until fibers are separated. Weave twist or braid fibers into rope, bracelets or whatever you want! Retains it's natural green color.
  • Hiking
    • Sound hike: list all the sounds you hear on your hike. Stop several times - just to listen!
    • Penny hike: great for city walks. Flip a penny - heads, turn left; tails, turn right. Bring along a map to track your trail, or make a map as you go.
    • Color walk: hand out shades of green, brown, yellow and other colors. Have girls find something that matches their color of paper. 1" squares work well.
    • Bingo hike: make up bingo cards with different things you might see on a hike: oak tree, blue jay, granite rock, worm, something red, etc. Take the cards - one per girl and a pen to cross out items as they are seen. Who gets BINGO first?
  • Carrot Garden
    • Cut a piece of carrot about 1" from the top of a carrot. Leave on the leaves and stem. Trim off the leaves, but not the leaf stems.
    • Scoop out the carrot at the cut end.
    • Make 2 little holes on opposite sides of the carrot shell and put strings through the holes.
    • Hang in a sunny window, scooped end up.
    • Fill the hollow part with water, adding more as it evaporates.
    • Leaves will soon appear and curl up around the carrot.
